Metal Details on a Simple Building Structure

Earthquake that came in this era and many victims, mainly due to the collapse of buildings should make us all to think. Is all this happened due to the earthquake magnitude?, Or is due to the quality of buildings that are not standard? Or from both?

Fulfillment of the quality of buildings, especially in the building structure is not negotiable additional fee for building earthquake-resistant construction standards when compared with the result that would occur if we are not going to mean sloppy.

Construction actors, both implementers and planners and the public should begin to consider and use of earthquake-resistant building standards in all construction activities to anticipate when the earthquake occurred, resulting in no casualties in vain for an economic reason.

Damage to the building with a spouse without the retrofitting construction is generally caused by:

  • Building the relative weight
  • Building is not ductile
  • Building is not able to resist the pull caused by the earthquake forces working in the field direction perpendicular to the wall.

Damage to the building with a construction partner is generally caused by:

  • There is no anchor for the binding between the walls with a strength element (columns and beams).
  • There is no element of retrofitting to the extent of wall ≥ 6m2.
  • Detail reinforcement that is not true at the meeting of reinforcement elements.
  • The quality of the concrete beam and column frame construction is very low.
  • Diameter and total cross-sectional area of reinforcement is set too small, the distance between the cross bar is set too large.

Design of Earthquake-Resistant Bamboo House

Bamboo is a renewable building material and is widely available in Indonesia. From about 1,250 species of bamboo in the world, 140 species or 11% of them are native to Indonesia. In Indonesia have long used bamboo for building houses, furniture, farm equipment, crafts, musical instruments, and food. However, bamboo is not a priority of development and is still seen as “poor people’s material that easily damaged.”

Bamboo has a power that can to compete with steel. Due to that high flexibility and strength, the structure of bamboo is also an earthquake-resistant building.

In principle, earthquake-resistant bamboo houses should be made with the following conditions:

  1. Using bamboo is old, has been preserved and in the dry state,
  2. Bamboo houses built on flat ground (solid)
  3. Foundation and Sloof (Sloof plugged into the foundation at each distance 50-100 cm) around the house plans
  4. The lower end of the bamboo columns go to the foundation and the inside of the lower end of the column is filled with reinforcement and mortar),
  5. Elements associated with the column wall should be plugged in some places,
  6. At the end of the column is given a ring that circled the block plan of the building, wall elements must also be plugged in to the ring beam,
  7. If there are wall openings such as wind-wind, windows and doors, should be strengthened in the opening round.
  8. At each meeting of the wall with the other wall.
  9. Framework of the roof (the horses) can be constructed with a simple pedestal (joint-rollers), where every seat frame roof should be put in place.
  10. Association of the wind on the roof should be installed at each inter horses. This wind ties, installed at the field slope of the roof under the roof covering, and in the vertical plane between two horses.

  • Make a trellis and planting vines on trellises around the outside of the house (can be done on the walls and or fences as well as an empty space on the page)
  • Soothing the home and produce food. Make a pergola around the house (adjusted for ambient conditions)
  • Provide a trellis vines, and cool the outside of the home
  • Plant shade trees of productive
  • Provide shade and cool air around the house
  • Placing the toilet and washing facilities, and adjust the direction of the wind outside
  • Prevents odors and impurities
  • Waste water flows into the filtering of productive
  • Clean water and sewage flow into productive plants
  • Creating ventilation and air flow in a good home
  • (hot air rises and flows out through the top vents and cool air in through the bottom)
  • Keep out of the house remains cool without charge
  • Insulation and noise temperature
  • Adjust the temperature and reducing noise pollution
  • Prevention of mosquitoes in the bedroom, where possible, the entire house.
  • Reduce the risk of infectious disease through mosquito
  • The placement of windows to get light or sunlight and
  • Increase the light in the house, reducing eye disorders
  • (sun light is the light that comes from sunlight, attempted to reproduce the sun’s light and minimized reduces incoming sunlight directly)
  • Windbreak trees that fit around the house or rural
  • Reduce wind and increase comfort, reduce the potential damage caused by wind
  • Fish ponds near the house
  • providing food, adjust the temperature and as a place to hold stagnant water
